HOW I KEEP THE TEEN ROOM SAFE

Last updated: August 25, 2026

The short version. A parent registers, not the student. Sessions are group only, never one to one. Everything is recorded and shared with that cohort alone. No AI notetakers or bots are allowed in the room. You get a note each week about what we covered. You can sit in any time without asking.

You are handing me an hour of your kid's week and a seat in a room with other people's kids. That deserves a straight answer about how the room is run, not a paragraph of reassurance buried in the terms.

A PARENT REGISTERS, NOT THE STUDENT

Teen seats are bought by a parent or legal guardian. You are the person entering into the agreement, you are the person I have contact details for, and you are the person I come to if something needs discussing.

Before checkout you confirm you are the parent or guardian. After checkout you complete a short consent form. Your student does not join the first session until that form is in. If it has not arrived as week one approaches, I will email you, and if it still has not arrived I will refund you rather than let a student attend without a parent's consent on file.

THE ROOM IS ALWAYS A GROUP

I do not hold one-to-one sessions with anyone under 18. The private coaching add-on is offered to the college and adult cohort only, and that is deliberate rather than a scheduling accident.

Inside the session there are no breakout rooms for the teen cohort. Everyone stays in the main room, where the whole group and I can see and hear each other for the full hour.

WHO IS IN THE ROOM

Nine students and me. Entry is through a waiting room, so nobody joins without being admitted, and I admit only people I am expecting. The session link is not public and should not be shared.

I run the room with my camera on for the entire session. I ask students to do the same, because seeing each other is the accountability the program runs on, but a student who needs their camera off can have it off. That is a conversation, not a rule.

RECORDINGS

Every session is recorded so a student who misses a week can catch up. Here is exactly what happens to those recordings.

You consent to recording on the intake form. If you would rather your student not appear on camera in a recording, tell me and we will work it out.

NO AI NOTETAKERS IN THE ROOM

AI meeting assistants have become normal at work, and plenty of adults now bring one to every call without thinking about it. They are not allowed in this room, and the teen cohort is the clearest case why.

When a notetaker bot joins a session, it copies the audio, the video, and the chat to a company none of us chose. Your consent covers my recording, held under the rules on this page and deleted after 120 days. It does not cover some other vendor holding your student's face and voice on terms you never saw and cannot ask them to undo.

So the rule is simple. No AI assistant, notetaker, transcription bot, or background app that captures a session, whether it shows up as a participant or runs on someone's laptop. If one appears, I remove it. If a participant keeps bringing one, I remove the participant.

This applies to me too. I do not run AI notetakers on these sessions. The only recording and transcript is the one the video platform itself makes.

Here is what I do with it, so you are not guessing. I use the transcript to write your weekly note and to make the program better next time. I may use AI tools to help me summarize it, on business accounts that do not train on what I put into them. I do not upload session video anywhere else, and the transcript is deleted on the same 120-day schedule as the recording. I do not use anything from the teen room publicly unless you have opted in separately, which is covered below. If that is not something you are comfortable with, tell me before week one and we will sort it out.

If a student needs live captions to take part, the video platform's own captions do that without sending anything outside. Tell me and I will switch them on.

WHAT I ASK STUDENTS FOR, AND WHAT I DO NOT

I ask what they are working on and what got in the way. That is the program.

I do not ask for medical information, diagnoses, medication details, IEP or 504 documents, or anything about their treatment. I am not a clinician, this is not therapy, and I have no business holding that information. If you send it anyway, I will delete it.

A diagnosis has never been required to take part, and I do not ask whether a student has one.

IF I EVER WANT TO TELL YOUR STUDENT'S STORY

Sometimes a student has a week that would genuinely help another parent to hear about. I may want to write about it, or ask you for a few sentences about how the program went. I am not going to do that quietly.

On the consent form there is an optional section about this, separate from everything required. Nothing in it is pre-selected, and your answer is about right now rather than forever. You can change it in either direction at any point by emailing me. Whatever you pick changes nothing about your student's place in the room, and I will not chase you about it.

Here is what I hold myself to regardless of what you tick:

If you want to say something nice about the program in your own words, that is a different thing and I would be glad to hear it. I will still ask before using it anywhere.

CONTACT BETWEEN SESSIONS

Program email goes to you, the parent. If a student emails me directly, I keep the reply about the work and copy you on anything beyond a one-line answer.

I do not message students on social media, and I do not use direct messages, texts, or private chats with anyone under 18. The teen cohort has no group chat. If your student contacts me somewhere other than email, I will tell you.

YOU ARE WELCOME IN THE ROOM

The session is designed for the students, and teens generally do better without a parent narrating over their shoulder. That said, you never need permission to be there. Sit in on any session you want, any week, without telling me first.

Each week I send you a note covering what we did and what your student is working on before the next session, so you can support it without hovering.

IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG

If a student is unkind to another student, harasses anyone, or shares something another student said outside the room, they are removed from the program. I will call you the same day. That standard is in the Terms and I will apply it.

If you are ever uncomfortable with something in the room, email me and I will answer you myself. If it is serious enough that you want it in writing, say so and I will put it in writing.

WHAT I AM NOT

I am not a therapist, counselor, clinician, or educator, and the Focus Room is not treatment, therapy, or special education. It is a productivity method taught in a small group. If your student needs clinical support, please work with a qualified professional. I am glad to run alongside that, never in place of it.
